So… what the hell is Pole Parlour, anyway?! (scratches head) In all honesty, it’s something I started in January 2015 with very little planning or long-term goals. I knew I loved pole dancing. I wanted a voice in the pole dance community. And I was looking for a creative outlet outside of my client work (I’m a freelance graphic designer/art director in real life). SO, when legendary pole dance brand Bad Kitty reached out to me for an interview, I was finally forced to sit down and articulate the ideas and schemes I’ve dreamt up since starting this little venture 10 months ago.
Please feel free to read the full article (which coincides with a now-expired comic caption contest) here. And because I feel this interview does a great job expressing the over-arching concept of Pole Parlour, I’m pasting the meaty part below…
How long have you been pole dancing and what got you into it?
I’ve been pole dancing since April 2013. I used to drive by a building with big block letters “SECRET POLE DANCE STUDIO” across the top and was fascinated. When I saw an online deal for the studio, I signed up, not knowing what to expect. Prior to this, I had never heard of pole dancing outside of a strip club! Needless to say, I was instantly hooked.
What is Pole Parlour and how did you start it?
I started Pole Parlour in the beginning of 2015 because I was interested in having an amateur voice in the pole community. It started as a blog, though I have been able to best connect with other poleaholics through Instagram. I’ve also recently started a cheeky merch line that I look forward to growing with time. Generally speaking, I’m interested in creating engaging pole-centric content that is unique, amusing, and empowering! Sometimes the online pole community can feel intimidating or overwhelming, so I want to do my part to keep things accessible and FUN. And to do so with stylish, feminist flair. Eventually, I hope to build an online girl gang of supportive, badass pole babes from all levels and backgrounds! I have an abundance of creative ideas for Pole Parlour, and am looking forward to bringing them to life in due time… I’ve only just begun!
“I’ve only just begun…”
Pole Parlour is still in it's infancy, and I’m really excited to see how things will organically grow over time. I’m in the midst of brainstorming ways to create a legit "Pole Parlour Girl Gang" and build an online community where passionate pole babes can virtually (and perhaps even physically!) connect. In the meantime, I’m having a blast curating cultural pole content and creating shareable pole-centric memes on social media. And since the blog admittedly gets neglected at times, I’m trying my best to be more consistent with unique content (such as Pole Dancin' Astrology and Parlour Girl personal pole stories). And lest we forget, my brain is constantly overflowing with ideas for new shop merch!
After attending Pole Expo a few weeks ago, I’ve become really emboldened and inspired to kick things up a notch! There is so much radness emerging in this community, and I truly hope to become a unique, empowering voice within it. I’d like to thank everyone who has supported this little endeavor thus far, and I promise you we’re just getting started!
