Post-Podcast Interview :: Michelle Mynx

I am so beyond excited for this week's podcast with pole dance pioneer, Michelle Mynx! She is a personal pole crush of mine, and her story is just so damn fun and interesting. On this episode, we talk about how how Michelle first fell in love with pole performing and doing showgirl competitions at strip clubs around the midwest, her experience touring around the world at diverse creative showcases with her Gravity Plays Favorites doubles partner, and the struggles and successes of opening her own pole studio, Michelle Mynx Academy, in St. Louis, Missouri. Check out the full episode here, then read more from Michelle below!

Where did you grow up, and what is your current home town?
I grew up in East St. Louis, Il and moved to Fairview Hts. Il just before high School.  I currently live in Belleville, Il. My studio, Mynx Academy, is in St. Louis, Mo.  which is just across the Mississippi River from me, so I generally claim St. Louis when asked.

Can you share a favorite pole dance photo of yourself?

Gravity Plays Favorites photo by Josh Rowen

And a favorite non-pole-life photo?
my first date with my now fiancé. She is my rock, my best friend, and my biggest fan.

What’s your go-to pole move?
I appreciate that you asked for go-to rather than favorite. Favorite would be SO hard to answer! Even for go-to I think I’ll have to give you one of each! Spin- Banana peel. Forwards, backwards, planked, stagged- I love it and do it a lot. I think some call it a body spiral. Trick- Seahorse* (or Scorpio, or Inside leg Hang) I have a million variations and use it often both as a transition and a highlighted pose. * I think there is a new trick commonly known as a Seahorse, but in the beginning there were no names that we knew of so Katrina and myself and other pole dancers at the club made up our own names at the time. Some of them stuck for me. This is one of them. Floorwork: Rollovers! All day every day in every way.

Give us a sexy floorwork song.

What’s a YouTube pole dance video we should check out?
This is the highlight reel from the 9th Annual Mynx Extravaganza put together by Peter Yeung Photography. I am SO incredibly proud of everyone and this video makes my day every time I watch it. You can see the joy pouring out of everyone. it’s such a tremendous showing of people celebrating their most authentic poling selves.

Give us a song that makes you want to immediately strip off your clothes and jump on the pole.
I tried to pick just one, I swear. But come on, I’ve been dancing to songs and ripping my clothes off for two decades. I’m amazed I narrowed it down to two :)

Who should we follow on Instagram?
JacqTheStripper! She’s a graphic comic, a stand-up comic, hilarious, brilliant, and a feminist stripper. What more do you need?

Show us an inspiring image.

Who would you like to see interviewed on the Pole Parlour Podcast?
This was a really tough question because there are SO many ! I have narrowed it down again :)  Anna May. Currently teaching , poling, and producing shows in Chicago. I met her years ago when she lived in central Illinois and did not have a home town studio. She was mostly self taught and would make occasional trips to Mynx Academy. She has worked harder than just about anyone I know training herself, learning and researching pole. She has grown into one of the most beautiful and moving performers in the industry and pours everything out onto the stage.  She is also an amazing pole instructor at the Brass Ring. (Shout out to Melissa Schrader, also a great candidate btw!) She has now begun producing variety pole showcases allowing artists to to bring their visions to life their way. Her shows are very well curated and professionally produced. Oh, and also she managed to get a law degree along the way and is a very loud and well spoken feminist and social justice warrior ( I mean that in a good way of course ;) And she isn’t even 30 yet. The woman never does anything half assed. It has been an honor and privilege to watch her grow.  The other is Jane Wilson, owner and creator of Pole Fit Nation out of Oakville, Ontario. Her story of how she met Pole Dance and her business and everything she has done since is amazing and definitely worth talking and hearing about. She’s one of those people that leaves you feeling inspired and like you can conquer anything. Plus she has that adorable Canadian accent and sometimes says something naughty with it and it just tickles me.

Thank you so much Ms. Mynx! <3
